China Warns Students, Academics, About the Risks of Studying in US

BEIJING – China warned students and academics on Monday about the risks involved in studying in the United States, pointing out the limits on the duration of visas and visa denials, in the midst of a bitter trade war and other tensions between the two countries, Strait Times reported Monday.
Relations between China and the US have plummeted because of their trade conflict and US sanctions on Chinese tech firm Huawei Technologies as well as tension over the disputed South China Sea and US support for Chinese-claimed Taiwan.
State television, quoting the Ministry of Education, said that recently, some students seeking to study in the US had problems with the duration of their visas being limited and an increase in the rejection of visas.
“This has affected Chinese students who are going to study in the United States or complete their studies without problems,” state television said.
“The Ministry of Education reminds students and academics of the need to strengthen risk assessment before studying abroad, improve awareness of prevention and make appropriate preparations,” The ministry refused to offer an immediate response.
What is at stake is approximately US $14 billion in economic activity, most of the tuition and other fees generated annually by the 360,000 Chinese citizens studying in the United States.
Mr. Hu Xijin, editor of the widely read Chinese newspaper The Global Times, linked the warning with the recent discrimination against students and the commercial dispute.
“This warning is a response to a recent series of discriminatory measures that the United States took against Chinese students and can also be seen as a response to the trade war initiated by the United States,” Hu wrote in his English Twitter account.
The United States issues a notice of travel to China and urges greater caution after the arrests.
Last year, the Chinese embassy in Washington issued a safety notice for Chinese citizens traveling to the United States, warning tourists to be aware of problems that include expensive medical bills, the threat of shootings and public robberies and searches and confiscations of customs agents.
A group of Republican colleagues in the Congress of US President Donald Trump introduced legislation last month with the intention of prohibiting anyone employed or sponsored by the Chinese military from receiving student or investigative visas in the United States.
