Russia can Not Prevent Georgia from Joining the Alliance: NATO

BRUSSELS, Belgium – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday declared that Georgia would join the Western military alliance and Russia could do nothing to stop it, Emerging Europe reported on Tuesday.
“NATO has clearly stated that Georgia will become a member of the alliance,” Stoltenberg said during a visit to the country.
“We will continue to work together to prepare for Georgia’s accession to NATO – no country has the right to influence NATO’s open-door policy.”
Mr. Stoltenberg was in Georgia to observe the training of Georgian and NATO forces. The NATO-Georgia exercise brings together approximately 350 participants from 24 NATO member countries and international organizations. The exercise is taking place at the NATO-Georgia Joint Training and Evaluation Center, which has contributed to the strengthening of Georgia’s defenses since its inauguration in 2015.
Stoltenberg said the exercise showed that NATO and Georgia are intensifying their cooperation. Georgia is one of NATO’s closest partners, working with the alliance for security in the Black Sea region. Georgia is also the largest non-NATO contributor to the alliance formation mission in Afghanistan and the NATO Response Force.
Last summer in Brussels, NATO leaders confirmed the decision of the 2008 Bucharest Summit to declare Georgia a member of NATO. The Secretary General welcomed Georgia’s significant progress in implementing important reforms and encouraged it to continue its efforts.
During his visit, Stoltenberg held talks with Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili and Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze.
