Voter Registration Materials to Reach Provinces in Two Weeks: IEC

KABUL – Transfer of voter registration materials to provinces will be completed in two weeks, the Independent Election Commission said on Saturday.
Such materials have already been delivered in eight provinces, said Zabihullah Sadat, acting spokesman of IEC.
Voter registration for September presidential election is scheduled to kick off on 8 June in 458 centres.
The election law requires the registration process to be done using biometric devices, however, IEC has said that it will not be possible due to shortage of time.
Election watchdogs accuse IEC of poor management of election process, claiming failure to meet election timetable has also been due to the same problem. The voter registration process was previously due to kick off on 16 May.
Meanwhile, IEC has yet to appoint provincial heads. Marwa Amini, a spokesman for Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan, expressed concern that the appointments would possibly be political.
Najibullah Ahmadzai, former head of IEC, also believes that massive fraud is possible in upcoming elections due to lack of biometric technology.
