10 United Nations Peace keepers Killed in Mali During Terrorist Attack

BAMAKO, Mali – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned “the complex attack” against Minusma, saying that the perpetrators may have committed a war crime, UPI reported Monday.
Ten United Nations peace keepers were killed in an alleged Al Qaeda-related terrorist attack against a UN mission in Mali.
At least 25 others were also wounded in the attack, the UN said in a press release, adding that the peace keepers were Chadian nationals.
On Sunday, an unknown number of terrorists attacked a base belonging to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali, the north of West Africa, the mission said.
The attack was, however, controlled by Minusma forces who “reacted vigorously,” the UN said, adding that several of the attackers had been killed.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the “complex attack” against Minusma in a statement issued by a spokesman.
“The Secretary-General calls on the Malian authorities, as well as the armed groups that signed the peace agreement, to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this attack so that they can be brought to justice as quickly as possible,” he said in a press release.
Guterres also said that the attack on UN peace keepers could be considered a war crime, reiterated a statement by members of the UN Security Council in a press release.
The mission added that the wounded had been evacuated to Minusma hospitals.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Mali, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, said: “This complex and cowardly attack illustrates the terrorists determination to wreak chaos and demands a firm, immediate and concerted response by all forces to eliminate the danger of terrorism.
Guterres said he wanted “a speedy recovery for the wounded” and he paid tribute to the “dedication and courage of the men and women serving in Minusma.”
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the North African branch of al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility, reported BBC News.
Minusma is one of the most dangerous peace operations in UN history, with 155 peace keepers killed in Mali since its inception in April 2013, the UN mission said
