Ambassador Says US and N. Korea is in Negotiations Behind the 2nd Summit

WASHINGTON – The United States and North Korea are continuing talks to hold a second summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Korea Herald quoted senior envoy to Washington as saying.
Trump and Kim both said they wanted to meet again to follow up on their first historic summit last June, which resulted in an agreement to work towards the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in exchange for security assurances. provided by the United States.
This week, Trump said the location would likely be announced “in the not too distant future”.
“It seems to me that communication through the exit channel for a North Korea-US summit is under way,” Ambassador Cho Yoon told reporters on Wednesday.
He did not clarify the communication but added: “President Trump and President Kim have a firm will, so I hope that a preparatory meeting (for the summit) will take place in the near future.”
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and top North Korean official Kim Yong-chol were scheduled to start planning in New York in November but the meeting was abruptly canceled.
Trump later said the summit could be held in January or February.
Progress in implementing the denuclearization agreement has been slow, but the ambassador said this year will be crucial in assessing last year’s diplomatic achievements.
“I think the results we are getting this year in terms of progress in the North American talks, denuclearization and inter-Korean relations will significantly determine whether 2019 will be a year of great change for the future of the Korean peninsula or a year it made a bold start but ended up taking a path similar to that of the past,” he said.
Last year, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Kim held three summits, in addition to the very first summit ever held between the United States and North Korea.
