Brexit Clash: Mps Want to Block Johnson, Leaving the EU Without any Agreement

LONDON – British lawmakers tried on Tuesday to prevent Prime Minister Boris Johnson from embarking on an unsuccessful Brexit, which, according to a senior government official, would prompt him to call for early elections on October 14, wrote Guy Faulconbridge.
More than three years after the United Kingdom voted in favour of leaving the European Union in a referendum, the outcome of the Brexit crisis remains uncertain, with a range of options ranging from turbulent exit without agreement to a complete abandonment of the company.
Johnson implicitly warned lawmakers on Monday (September 2nd) that he would run for an election if they tied his hands, thus ruling out any postponement to Brexit, scheduled for October 31st.
This sets up a historic standoff between British Prime Minister and Parliament on Brexit in a country once touted as a confident pillar of Western economic and political stability.
An alliance of opposition lawmakers and conservative Johnson Party rebels will take advantage of Parliament’s first day off to launch an attempt to block an exit without an agreement. They are confident of victory.
“The priority is to prevent an exit without the EU’s agreement on the 31st and we will see what happens after that,” opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said.
“Let’s see what happens after the adoption of this law,” Corbyn said. “And if elections are called, I’m ready to fight them.”
In the eyes of the Brexit maelstrom, opposition parties could try to prevent Johnson from calling an election – requiring the support of two-thirds of legislators – until they pass their bill blocking a Brexit without compromise.
