Erdogan Says It’s Unacceptable that Turkey Can’t have Nuclear Weapons

ANKARA – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday it was unacceptable for nuclear-armed states to forbid Ankara from obtaining its own nuclear weapons.
“Some countries have nuclear warhead missiles, not one or two. But (they tell us) we can not have them, that I can not accept,” he told AKP members in power in the eastern city of Sivas.
But he did not say whether Turkey was considering getting such weapons.
“There is no developed country in the world that does not have them,” said Erdogan.
However, many developed countries do not possess nuclear weapons.
He also criticized Israel, saying its nuclear weapons posed a threat to other nations.
The Turkish leader has hinted that he wants the same protection for Turkey as Israel.
“We have Israel nearby, do not they?”. “They scare (other nations) with them,” he said.
Foreign analysts say Israel has a huge nuclear arsenal. Israel maintains a policy of ambiguity on the nuclear issue, refusing to confirm or deny its capabilities.
Turkey does not possess nuclear weapons and has been a party to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty since 1980.
The Turkish leader’s remarks come amidst the emerging defense ties between Turkey and Russia, defying NATO’s ally in Ankara, the United States.
