FAO Warns About Dangers Due to Loss of Biodiversity

ROME – We are losing our biodiversity and the base of our food security, that is the link that we have to bear in mind, FAO Director General Jose Graziano da Silva warned on Saturday, Italian News Agencies reported.
The FAO official described the progressive loss of biological diversity as a challenge for the sustainability of the human being, at the ceremony to launch the report ‘The State of Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture in the World’.
The document is ‘the first of its kind and we are very proud of it,’ as it gathers information on 91 countries and more than 20 international institutions, and due to its great importance it must be updated at least every three or five years,’ Da Silva noted.
He warned that nature is at stake and pointed out how the report shows the decreasing dependence on fewer species to feed human beings and how there is a concentration of few species that provide food support.
Among them, Da Silva mentioned wheat, adding that 25-40 percent of everything we eat depends on it, so it is one of the cereals most affected by climate change, not only due to the increase in temperature and the shortage of water, but because it is affected in its components, with less vitamins, minerals and proteins.
The report was drawn up under the guidance of Genetic Resources Commission of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Its elaboration lasted five years and it involved more than 175 collaborators from that UN agency.
