First Mayor Murdered in Mexico

MEXICO City – Alejandro Aparicio Santiago had just been sworn in the city hall of a small village in southern Mexico after which he was shot dead, New York Post said Thursday.
A member of the National Regeneration Movement – was on his way to his first official meeting at City Hall on Tuesday when a group of gunmen shot him down in a shower of bullets.
Mexican mayors and politicians seem to share the same longevity without the luck of the Grateful Dead keyboardists.
Between September 2017 and August 2018, 175 politicians were murdered, according to the New York Post.
Especially if they swear to suppress the country’s widespread corruption, which is often fueled by bloodthirsty drug cartels.
A mayor may also land at the morgue if he chooses the wrong cartel to support.
In Oaxaca, where Santiago was murdered, drug gangs tend to be weaker and politicians are more likely to be reduced due to land conflicts.
On Sunday, María Ascención Torres Cruz, a member of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s party, was murdered in the state of Morelos.
The state government announced the death on Twitter by writing “Que en paz descanse” – Spanish for “Rest in peace”.
Governor Alejandro Murat promised a thorough investigation and said a suspect was already in custody. Four other people were injured in the attack.
Obrador – who usually travels with a small unarmed security element – campaigned on a platform to restore order.
