Hekmatyar Enters His Name for the Presidential Election

KABUL – Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the Hizb-e-Islami leader, will run for president in upcoming presidential elections as he registered his name on Saturday.
Fazl Hadi Wazeen, an Islamic studies researcher and a university lecturer, is Hekmatyar’s running mate for First Vice President.
Qazi Hafizurrahman Naqi, Hekmatyar’s running mate for Second Vice President is an Islamic Studies graduate and has worked in the Supreme Court.
So far, Hekmatyar, 69, is the ninth presidential candidate. According to Independent Election Commission’s timeline, the candidates’ registration process will end on Jan. 20.
Addressing reporters at the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Saturday, Hekmatyar said he is running for president “from an independent address” and that he is not in favor of “forming alliances”.
In other parts of his speech, Hekmatyar slammed the government regarding the existing situation in the country and claimed that the government leadership was to blame for the ongoing violence.
He added that “the system must change” but through a peaceful mean.
He said he is against a federal government and that he is not in favor of a semi-presidential system.
So far, nine candidates have registered their names for the presidential elections including Hakim Torsan, Latif Pedram, Faramuz Tamana, Enayatullah Hafiz, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Zalmai Rasool, Noor Ul Haq Ulomi, Gulbudddin Hekmatyar and Syed Noorullah Jalili.
The presidential elections are scheduled for July 20.
