Iran Faces “The Biggest Pressure”, Economic Sanctions in 40 Years

TEHRAN – Iran is currently wrestling with “the biggest economic pressures and sanctions of the past 40 years,” Islamic Republic President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday about the crippling sanctions renewed by Washington last year.
In comments posted on his official website, Rouhani stressed that “our problems are mainly due to the pressure exerted by the United States and its supporters, and that the government and the Islamic system should not be blamed”.
He promised that the nation would “suffer” apart from strong arms efforts. “The US administration will definitely fail in its latest action against the Iranian nation,” he said. “Nobody can hurt us as long as we follow the supreme guide.”
Rouhani spoke at a ceremony honoring Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, as the country prepares to mark the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution of February 1979.
In May of last year, US President Donald Trump decided to abandon the 2015 nuclear deal and impose new sanctions on Tehran. This decision resulted in a record drop in the Iranian currency, an exodus of foreign companies, plunged the country into a recession and renewed economic isolation.
Trump called the deal “the worst case of all time” and said he gave nothing to the United States. The administration has criticized the agreement on its sunset clauses that allow the expiry of some restrictions of the Iranian nuclear program, its inability to prevent Iran’s ballistic missile testing and its continued support to regional terrorist groups.
Rouhani said on Wednesday that “Iran’s greatest political pride in recent decades and decades has been the powerful talks between Iran and the six major powers, as well as the victories won by Iran in various fields. fields, it will never be lost. ”
He said the international community stood with Tehran, saying “the whole world condemns US plots against the Iranian nation and supports Iran in this regard”.
The European Union has condemned the renewal of sanctions by Washington and is working to establish a legal entity allowing companies to trade with Iran and avoid sanctions imposed by the United States.
