Khalilzad Hopes Afghans Put Political Differences Aside

KABUL – US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad on Monday expressed hope that Afghans seize the opportunity to put political differences aside and deal with the moment positively and urgently.
Addressing journalists in Kabul following six days of talks with the Taliban in Qatar, Khalilzad said that the sides made “significant progress” and agreed to agreements in principle on a couple of very important issues.
He, however, said that there is a lot more work to be done before “we can say we have succeeded in our efforts.”
“Seize the opportunity. We have the opportunity to avoid future tragedies, to bring the 40 years of war to an end, to a good end and I urge everyone to rise to the occasion. I am hopeful that they will,” Khalilzad said.
The meeting in Doha was the fourth in a series of talks between the Taliban and the US envoy.
New York Times quoted Khalilzad as saying that they agreed in principle to the framework of a peace deal in which the insurgents guarantee to prevent Afghanistan from being used by terrorists, and that could lead to a full pullout of US troops in return to a ceasefire and Taliban talks with the Afghan government.
Khalilzad said that he encouraged the Taliban to engage in direct talks with the Afghan government.
On a possible ceasefire, the envoy said that the US was working with the Afghan government and international partners to find implementing mechanisms to reach these goals.
On suggestion of interim government, Khalilzad said that he did not discuss the issue with the Taliban.
The envoy said that the US was in a hurry for peace in Afghanistan.
