“No possibility” of Negotiations with Washington: Zarif

LONDON – Iranian authorities on Thursday rejected negotiations with the United States in a climate of increasing tension between the two countries.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in Tokyo that there is “no possibility” of negotiations with Washington. “I do not know why President Trump is confident,” he told reporters.
Iran has pledged to respect its obligations under an international nuclear deal despite the withdrawal of the US from the historic agreement, he said, calling “unacceptable” the imposition of US sanctions.
Iran is exercising “maximum restraint even though the US withdrew from the JCPOA last May,” Zarif said at the start of his meeting with Japan’s foreign minister.
He was referring to the joint global action plan signed in 2015 by the United States, Iran and other countries, under which Iran limited its uranium enrichment capacity and obtained sanctions in return.
President Donald Trump has pulled the United States out of last year’s deal and is tightening sanctions against Iran, to stifle its economy by ending its international crude oil sales.
He sent a group of aircraft carriers, B-52 bombers and Patriot missiles to the Middle East to counter what Washington calls Iran’s increased threat to US soldiers and interests in the region.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Tuesday that Tehran was not trying to wage war with the United States despite mounting tensions.
“There will be no war, the Iranian nation has chosen the path of resistance,” state media quoted Khamenei as saying. “We do not seek war, nor do they, and they know it’s not in their interest.”
Kamal Kharrazi, chairman of Iran’s Strategic Foreign Relations Council (CSFR), said on Thursday that “no one in Iran is willing to negotiate with Trump”.
In an interview on French television, he said: “We see no reason to enter into negotiations with the team currently in the White House seeking to change the Iranian regime.”
He added that Tehran “does not trust” the US administration.
