North Korean Leader on Four-Day Visit to China

BEIJING – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a four-day visit likely to coordinate his efforts with his only major ally before the summit with US President Donald Trump, which is to be held this year, daily Guardian reported on Tuesday.
A long procession of motorcycles, including motorcyclists reserved for heads of state, left a Beijing train station soon after the arrival of an armored train consisting of 20 to 25 cars – most of which were windows obscured – as well as numerous tracks traced by police and paramilitaries.
Kim’s trip which was announced earlier by both parties, comes after US and North Korean officials have met in Vietnam to discuss the location of a second summit.
The North Korean central news agency said Kim left Monday afternoon with his wife Ri Sol-ju and other senior officials. Kim visited China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Xinhua News Agency published an almost identical report, while Beijing’s North Railway Station was secure, with dozens of police and paramilitary soldiers patrolling outside.
Kim is expected to stay at the highly secure Diaoyutai State Guest House in the west of the capital at meetings held at the Great People’s Palace, the imposing seat of the legislature next to Tiananmen Square.
This trip marked a new break from past practice, in that it was announced before Kim’s arrival, a possible sign of growing confidence from North Korea and China, the main trading partner of Pyongyang, and an essential buffer against Washington’s pressure.
Kim’s trip comes as the United States and North Korea seek to end the decades-long pursuit by the North of a nuclear arsenal.
“The two leaders will continue to communicate on the issue of sanctions to refine their previously broad and vague attitudes,” said Cheng Xiaohe, a professor at the School of International Studies at Renmin University in Beijing.
