Pompeo Reiterated US Support for Election in July: Ghani

KABUL – Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday spoke by phone with Pompeo reiterating commitment to Afghanistan.
The conversation came amid concerns about a hasty US withdrawal from Afghanistan and frustration in the Ghani government about being left out of talks with the Taliban. There are also suggestions from some Afghan politicians of forming an interim government.
During the phone call, Pompeo stressed that there is no uncertainty and ambiguity about the US commitment to Afghanistan and our enduring partnership, Ghani wrote on Twitter.
The diplomat further stressed that “our military partnership is unwavering and will remain until a lasting and inclusive peace is achieved.”
Pompeo also underscored the central importance of ensuring the centrality of the Afghan government in the peace process. He reiterated the US commitment and support to holding the upcoming presidential election in July.
Ghani tweeted: “We both agreed that words, rumors, and speculations cannot replace actions and that our partnership and resolve will remain strong in the pursuit of peace,”
