Russia and Turkmenistan to Discuss Various Issues Affecting the Interests of the Caspian Region

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will be in Ashgabat on February 5 and 6, Trend News agency said quoting the press service of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov is planned as part of the visit, during the visit Negotiations will be held with the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkmenistan, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov.
“The parties will discuss the main issues on the bilateral agenda, namely a number of international and regional issues that affect the interests of the countries of the Caspian Sea region,” the report said.
Particular attention will be paid to cooperation within the CIS, considering the priorities of the Turkmen presidency in that organization in 2019.
During the visit, a program of cooperation between the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Turkmen Foreign Ministry for 2019-2020 will be signed, the report said.
Turkmenistan and Russia actively cooperate in the field of business as well.
There are about 190 Russian-owned companies in Turkmenistan. ARETI has been operating in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea since 2009 on the basis of a production sharing agreement.
Russia, Turkmenistan’s traditional trading partner, halted the purchase of Turkmen gas in 2016. However, it was announced that the parties would begin talks on the resumption of the purchase of gas from Turkmenistan by Gazprom.
