Trump, Kim will Probably Choose Hanoi for Their Second Summit

SEOUL, South Korea – US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to meet in the Vietnamese capital for their second summit on Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions, South Korea’s Munhwa newspaper reported Monday.
The denuclearization talks have failed since Trump and Kim held an unprecedented meeting in Singapore last June with Washington and Pyongyang calling each other to action.
A second summit could respond to global security concerns after Kim pressured Trump into threatening in his annual New Year’s speech to take a “new path” if the United States did not soften economic sanctions.
US officials have met with their North Korean counterparts in Hanoi for talks to adjust the timing of the talks, the paper said, citing high-level diplomatic sources in Seoul and Washington who did not want to be named. Government officials did not comment on the report.
Such a summit would certainly attract the attention of the whole world and help to improve the profile of the host country. But it also poses enormous security problems for Trump and Kim.
Vietnam is a long-time ally of Pyongyang, which has good relations with Washington. Speculation about the country’s prospects as a summit site increased after the visit of North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho from 29 November to 2 December.
The South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo had previously stated that Mark Lambert, a senior US State Department official in charge of North Korea, had visited Vietnam in December. It was not known whether he was in Vietnam at the same time as the North Korean Foreign Minister.
Trump has already announced his intention to hold a second meeting with Kim this month, although the date and location have not yet been announced.
