US Air Force Awarded $ 200mln Contract for Developing Advanced Defensive Systems

WASHINGTON – The US Air Force has awarded defense contractor Northrop Grumman a $200 million contract for the provision of advanced defensive defense systems, Defences Blog said Tuesday.
Northrop Grumman has been awarded a contract for the construction of a batch of Infrared Large Aircraft Control Systems (LAIRCM). This order was received under an indefinite delivery contract with an indefinite quantity.
Northrop Grumman’s LAIRCM system protects crews by automatically detecting, tracking, and blocking incoming infrared threats.
The LAIRCM Defense System is a directional infrared active jammer designed to defeat a wide range of ground-pulling infrared (heat seeking) missiles. The system blocks infrared missile searchers through the sensor opening, causing the missile to miss the target. LAIRCM automatically detects the launch of a missile, determines if it is a threat, and activates a laser-based high-intensity countermeasure system to track and defeat the missile.
The advanced LAIRCM system will enable planes without integrated systems to provide the security and safety needed to enter hot spots around the world.
“With this award, we continue to protect US and international flight crews from the threat of infrared-guided weapons,” said Bob Gough, Vice President, C4ISR Land and Avionics at Northrop Grumman.
Northrop Grumman’s infrared countermeasures, which have been installed on more than 1,500 aircraft of more than 80 types worldwide, enable enabling missions around the world.
