US, Israel Test the Arrow 3 Missile and Declare the Trial a Success

JERUSALEM – Israel and the United States successfully tested their advanced Arrow 3 missile defense system early Tuesday morning, the defense ministry said Tuesday.
Just before 6:45 am, a fake missile was launched off the coast of Israel to simulate the type of long-range ballistic missile that the Arrow 3 system is designed to intercept, Times of Israel reported.
“After the launch, Arrow’s radar located the target on his radar network and transferred the data to his fire management center, which analyzed it and completely planned the interception. Once the planning was completed, an Arrow 3 interceptor was fired at the target, which allowed the mission to carry out its mission, “the ministry said in a statement.
The test was conducted by the Department of Defense’s Missile, Defense Homa Directorate and the US Missile Defense Agency, with the help of the Israeli Air Force and the Israeli aerospace industries, which manufactures the aircraft Arrow 3.
The Arrow 3 system, an improved model of the Arrow and Arrow 2 models, was declared operational in January 2017. The air defense system, developed jointly with the United States, is designed to shoot down ballistic missiles – such as those Israel has fears for Iran, may one day launch on it – while the incoming projectile is still outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
“The success of this test represents an important step in Israel’s operational capabilities to defend itself against current and future existential threats,” said the defense Ministry.
The arrow was launched from Palmachim Air Base in central Israel, and the trail left behind was visible from as far away as Jerusalem because of the clear morning.
Complemented by several other missile defense systems designed to protect Israel from short-, medium- and long-term attacks, the Arrow 3 system represents the highest level of Israel’s multi-level missile defense network.
The Arrow 3 was successfully tested in July as part of a major missile defense exercise that also tested the capabilities of the Short-Range Iron Dome and Medium Range David’s Sling.
Prior to that, the system had been successfully tested in February 2018, after months of delays and technical problems. In January, an exercise was canceled due to a data transfer problem and in December, a test was canceled for security reasons.
