Venezuelan Govt and Opposition Envoys in Norway for Talks

CARACAS, Venezuela – Representatives of the Venezuelan government and the opposition are in Norway for talks on resolving the stalemate that plunged the South American nation into a political and economic crisis, VoA reported Thursday.
According to Venezuelan officials, Minister of Information Jorge Rodriguez will represent President Nicolas Maduro, while lawmaker Stalin Gonzalez will lead the opposition delegation.
President Maduro said Rodriguez was “on a very important mission” abroad during a televised speech on Wednesday, but did not provide details.
Negotiations in Norway took place after the army failed to respond to the April 30th call by opposition leader and so-called president, Juan Guaido, to stand up against Maduro. Guaido, the leader of the National Assembly, declared himself acting president earlier this year after the opposition-majority legislature determined that Maduro had been re-elected in a fraudulent election.
The United States and about 50 other countries recognize Guaido as the legitimate president of Venezuela. Venezuela has put the United States in disagreement with Russia, which supplied military equipment to the Maduro regime, and Cuba, which the United States accuses of having placed pro-Maduro troops on the ground in Venezuela.
Also, on Wednesday, the United States suspended all commercial flights between the United States and Venezuela.
Secretary of State for Transport Elaine Chao said, together with the State Secretaries for National and National Security, that she had determined that conditions existed in Venezuela “that threaten the safety of passengers, aircraft or the crew”.
Many international airlines, including those in the United States, have already stopped flying in Venezuela due to political upheavals.
